Holy Trinity Church, Eccleshall & St Chad's Church, Slindon (Updated Nov. 2011)
It will be very helpful if both of you together were to consider everything listed here very carefully. Some of it involves the legal position. Other points will form a check-list for some important practical details. (NB Please note straight away that if either of you has been married before, or one of you is a foreign national, then some special procedures apply.) ● 1 Qualifying for a wedding in Holy Trinity, Eccleshall, or St Chad's, Slindon This section is a simple quide on who may get married in Holy Trinity or St Chad's, not a complete summary of the law. 1.1 Age. If you are of marrying age but one or both of you are under 18 on the wedding day, parental (or guardian's) consent to the marriage needs to be to be given. 1.2 Living within the parish. If one of you lives within the church Parish of Eccleshall, you can be married in Holy Trinity or St Chad's (but please see paragraph 1.6). The parish includes Aspley, Brockton, Copmere End, Garmelow, Little Sugnall, Mill Meece, Offley Hay, Offley Rock, Pershall, Slindon, Sturbridge, Sugnall, Walton and Wootton. 1.3 When neither lives in the parish, but one or both are on the Church Electoral Roll The church keeps a roll of those who can vote representatives onto the church council. The roll can include regular worshippers who don't actually live in the parish. If neither of you is not resident in Eccleshall Parish, but one of you has your name on this church electoral roll, then you may be married in Holy Trinity or St Chad's (but, again see paragraph 1.6). 1.4 When neither lives in the parish (and is not on the church electoral roll) – but there is a 'qualifying connection' If either of you has a strong link (a 'qualifying connection' as defined in the Church of England Marriage Measure 2008) with the Parish of Eccleshall, you may (subject to paragraph 1.6) be married in Holy Trinity or St Chad's. Examples of such a link include parents' residence in the parish; one of you having lived here for six months or more; one of you having been baptised in Holy Trinity or St Chad's. Worshipping for six months at Holy Trinity or St Chad's would be another such connection. Please see more accurate details here on the 'Qualifying Connection' form. 1.5 When neither lives in the parish, is not on the church electoral roll and there is no 'qualifying connection' There may be other connections that you have with Holy Trinity or St Chad's which are not defined as 'qualifying connections'. It will be possible to discuss these, because if the vicar agrees that they are substantial there may be another way (by Special Licence - see paragraph 3.4 below) to permit your marriage in Eccleshall Parish. 1.6 When one or both of you has been married before. If either of you has had to face the pain of a divorce or of separation then you are asked, before you make any other arrangements, to ’phone the vicar and arrange to come to see him to discuss the situation. Please note that if we go ahead with a wedding in church then you will be asked to ensure that it is made public by way of the Marriage Registrar’s Certificate (see paragraph 3.2 below). ●2 Applying to be married at Holy Trinity, Eccleshall or St Chad's, Slindon This section explains that you will need to send in an application form and also (if necessary, a 'qualifying connection' form). 2.1 Application form Should you wish to apply to be married in this parish, please would you both complete and sign the enclosed application form and send it back to the vicar (or to the parish administrator). The form includes information that we'll need for the marriage registers. The date and time of the wedding you enter on the form will be subject to confirmation by the vicar – please don't regard your choice of date and time as fixed or accepted until this confirmation. 2.2 Qualifying connection form Please refer to paragraph 1.4 above. If neither of you lives in Eccleshall church parish, but one or both of you would like to establish that you do indeed have a 'qualifying connection' with the parish, then please would you also complete the enclosed 'Qualifying Connection' form. You will see there the various options. The vicar has a legal duty to ensure that the connection you claim is a valid one. Please note that supporting documents and evidence are important. The vicar may need to ask you to provide further information or evidence. ●3 The required legal preliminaries to marriage This is an important section because the law requires certain things to be done prior to your marriage. You will need to play your part in ensuring that these preliminaries are done correctly. 3.1 Common Licence Your marriage may be by way of Common Licence. This route is useful in certain circumstances, for example, if one of you is often based abroad. In addition, if either of you is a foreign national (i.e.holding a non-UK passport) your marriage will need to be by way of Common Licence. This is to ensure that no marriage of convenience is involved. If you are a foreign national, you will also need to check with the appropriate embassy or embassies that your marriage, if celebrated in Eccleshall Parish, would be recognised in your home country or country of origin. 3.2 Marriage Registrar's certificate If either of you has been married before, and if after discussions with you it has been decided that your marriage can take place in Holy Trinity or St Chad's (see paragraph 1.6), then you are asked to take responsibility for ensuring that your marriage is publicised by way of Marriage Registrar's Certificate. The Registrar may ask for a letter from the vicar confirming that your marriage is booked in Eccleshall Parish. 3.3 Banns Publishing ‘banns’ (reading out the names of the engaged couple in church in a special announcement on three consecutive Sundays) is the usual way of publicising a marriage. Banns are a strict legal requirement and therefore a very important responsibility of yours. You will need to ensure that your banns are read out at the right times (1) in the parish or parishes where you live (and if you live in two different parishes, this will mean having the banns read in two different Church of England parish churches), and (2) also in any parish where either of you is on the electoral roll of the church. Also you will need to get a ‘banns certificate’ from any parish where they are read out (except in the case of the parish where you are getting married) to give to the person who will take the marriage service. These certificates are proof that the banns have been published. 3.4 Special Licence In those situations where neither of you lives in Eccleshall Parish, and neither of you has a 'qualifying connection', then, if the vicar agrees to support your application, it may be possible to apply for and obtain the Archbishop of Canterbury's Special Licence, which is a discretionary licence. Please note that this route is not available for those who have been married before. Please discuss this option with the vicar. Any such application will need the vicar's support – and you will also need to consult the clergy in the parish(es) where you live. ●4 Some practical details This section gives you certain information and helps you with some planning. 4.1 Service-taker Usually the vicar is the one who takes marriage services in Eccleshall Parish. However, on some days in the year he is not available, and it cannot usually be determined months in advance when his annual break or other absences may fall. If your marriage is to take place in this parish and it turns out that the vicar cannot take your service, then he will arrange for a clergy colleague to have the honour of seeing you married. 4.2 The service For marriages in this parish several things need to be decided, including: the type of service; music and hymns (see the enclosed sheet which has some suggestions); bells (Eccleshall only); date for 'rehearsal' (only the couple intending marriage will be needed for this). We have hymn books in church which can be used at weddings; or you may wish to print your own orders of service in due course, in which case we shall need to discuss the service arrangements before you arrange for any printing; and you will need, with the printers, to ensure that there is no breach of the copyright laws. It is recommend that you choose at least three ushers to help at the service. Most of the necessary decisions will be done when you meet the vicar (see paragraph 4.9). Please note that a church choir is not available for weddings. 4.3 Flowers If you would like to give flowers to church to make it beautiful for your wedding then, before making any arrangements, please do 'phone one of these people to find out our approach to decorating the church - For Eccleshall: Joyce Adnitt (01785 850579) For Slindon: Pat Milner (01785 850031) These people will discuss with you what needs to be done when more than one wedding takes place on the same day in the same church; or when there may be special arrangements in certain seasons of the year (for example Lent, or Easter); or when there needs to be co-operation with those on the church flower rotas who often have a special reason for wishing to arrange flowers for a certain week-end or date. 4.4 Video There is also the question of a video, which can be a sensitive subject because of the law of copyright. The good news is that we don't charge for a video of the wedding service in this parish, but we have to ask you to agree to three things, with your agreement given simply by your booking a wedding within Eccleshall parish: (1) only one person will be permitted to take a video during the service; (2) all responsibility for ensuring that there will be no breach of copyright will be your own; and (3) neither the video of your wedding nor any part of it will ever be shown or played at any public performance. 4.5 Photography We want you to have a beautiful record of your marriage in church, and welcome photography in church. Please discuss with your chosen photographer what you would like, bearing in mind whether you think any plans may prove obtrusive in the service, or take a long time. We will accept your choices here. 4.6 Confetti This isn't banned – nor do we make negative comments about confetti at wedding services. Nevertheless, if you could encourage guests to use only biodegradable confetti, and to bring it out only at the church gate, that would be helpful. Petals are best! Please see the enclosed sheet that goes into the details here. Please note that if you are booking your wedding a long way in advance, wedding fees are likely to be increased each January (and sometimes in April as well). You are asked to send payment to the relevant church treasurer or finance officer at least a fortnight before your wedding: For Holy Trinity, Mrs Sue Hall, Bryn Holly, Sturbridge, Eccleshall, Stafford, ST21 6LE ; and for St Chad's, Mr John Leather, Ankerton House, Eccleshall, Stafford, ST21 6LZ.
4.8 Parking With both churches parking is difficult. Neither Eccleshall Church Parish nor St Chad's, Slindon can take responsibility here. You would be wise to warn your guests about this, so that they can make plans not to park in such a way as to render the road involved dangerous. Sometimes, in the case of Holy Trinity, some arrangement is made with the cricket club or with the tennis club. 4.9 Planning day Once you have read this you will need to send to the vicar of Eccleshall your completed application form (and if necessary your 'Qualifying Connection' form). Should your application be accepted, you will be sent an invitation to a wedding preparation day, which usually takes place on a Saturday in February. The day starts at 11am, ends between 3pm and 4pm, and usually includes lunch or refreshments. You will have the chance to talk to the vicar, to hear music options, and meet various church personnel. (Don't worry if you book your wedding on a date after February – we will meet and talk at another time.) When you come to the planning day, please would you bring all the papers sent to you (except the form(s) which you will already have sent); and you may also wish to purchase and bring this book: “Readings for Weddings” edited by Mary Oakley, published by SPCK 2004 (ISBN-13:978-0-281-05329-2 or ISBN-10:0-281-05329-4). The paperback edition of the book costs around £9; or you may find a second-hand copy via the internet. It is hoped that this paper has answered most of your questions. But please don't hesitate to ask about anything else, or if you need clarification on anything written here. Contact either by phone, or else by making a note of what you want to ask and then bring it up at the wedding preparation day, at which you will be most welcome.
